"Fire House in the Rain" Archival Print on Watercolor Paper
"Fire House in the Rain" Archival Print on Watercolor Paper
This series of India Ink drawings, titled Adrift, are made on Spalted Maple Wood. Inspired by the devastating floods that took place in the artist’s hometown of Ellicott City, MD, in 2016 and 2018. The word “spalted” refers to the very beginning stages of decomposition, which creates beautifully intricate lines in the natural wood. The wood is first cured, and a drawing - partly from life, partly imagined - is then made in ink on the surface. Each drawing is unique to the natural wood pattern beneath. The buildings swim in floodwaters that mimic the artists’ own emotions at the sight of her hometown uprooted.
